The only carbon shoe you need on race day?

Carbon race shoes now come from nearly every major running brand. They promise better running economy, more energy return, and faster times. Yet only a handful of models manage to be extremely light, aggressive, and still comfortable enough for a marathon.

The ASICS Metaspeed Sky Tokyo belongs to that small group. At around 170 grams, with a full-length carbon plate and a completely reworked midsole, it's one of the most uncompromising race-day shoes on the market.

Built for longer, more powerful strides

ASICS splits its Metaspeed line into two running styles. The Metaspeed Sky Tokyo is built for stride-runners — runners who get faster by lengthening their stride. For cadence-runners (higher step frequency instead of longer strides), ASICS offers the Metaspeed Edge Tokyo.

The carbon plate sits comparatively flat in the midsole. Combined with the highly reactive cushioning, it's designed to enable a powerful toe-off and extend your stride — this is not a restrained ride. This shoe wants to be moved fast.

170 grams, still marathon-capable

Perhaps the most impressive feature: ASICS lists only around 170 grams for US men's size 9 — one of the lightest full carbon race shoes in its class. RunRepeat's independent lab test measured an even lighter 163 grams. Yet it still delivers nearly 40mm of heel cushioning — enough for half marathon and marathon distances, not just short road races.

FF LEAP meets FF TURBO PLUS

The midsole combines two foams: the new, soft and springy FF-LEAP (strong compression, noticeable energy return) topped with FF TURBO PLUS for more structure and control. Between them, the full-length carbon plate stabilizes the soft midsole and supports rollover at higher speeds. Run it slow, and you barely tap into its aggressive geometry — it's only at tempo and race pace that this shoe shows what it was built for.

What the Sky Tokyo feels like in a race

Light, soft, explosive. The shoe nearly disappears on foot while the midsole compresses and springs back noticeably with every step. Runners with an active mid- or forefoot strike are likely to benefit most. Independent reviews (including The Run Testers) praise the low weight and springy ride, while flagging limited stability.

Grip in tricky conditions

The ASICSGRIP outsole performs well in tests (OutdoorGearLab reports solid traction on cold, wet asphalt) despite minimal rubber coverage. For gravel, forest trails or dirty surfaces, tread and protection are lacking — the Sky Tokyo remains a pure road racer.

The weaknesses

Limited stability — the soft FF-LEAP foam can give laterally; may feel unsteady with overpronation or unstable ankles.

Low everyday versatility — built for racing and fast key sessions, not easy long runs.

Potentially limited durability — upper and outsole are trimmed heavily for weight, with parts of the midsole exposed.

Style-dependent — cadence-runners may be better served by the Metaspeed Edge Tokyo.

Who is this shoe for?

Good fit for: neutral runners, stride-runners, mid-/forefoot strikers, ambitious athletes chasing a time goal, fast races from 5K to marathon.

Less suited for: strong overpronation, unstable ankles, predominant heel strikers, easy training runs, gravel/trail.

Verdict: worth racing in?

The ASICS Metaspeed Sky Tokyo is one of the most compelling carbon race shoes of its generation — extremely light, cushioned enough for a marathon, aggressively built, and remarkably reactive. Is it the only carbon shoe worth racing in? Of course not for everyone — running style, foot shape and stability needs differ too much for that. But for neutral stride-runners looking for a light, soft, uncompromisingly fast shoe, it comes remarkably close to living up to that claim.
