A handshake that predicts more than you'd think

Your GP's blood pressure cuff has competition. A wave of recent research — including a UK Biobank analysis of half a million adults and a JAMA study following thousands of older women for nearly a decade — keeps landing on the same finding: grip strength is one of the simplest, cheapest predictors of long-term health we have.

What the research actually shows

A few of the most-cited numbers: in the large PURE study of nearly 140,000 people across 17 countries, every 5 kg drop in grip strength was linked to a 16% higher risk of death over the follow-up period. A separate UK Biobank analysis of around half a million adults found a similar 5 kg drop associated with roughly a 20% higher risk. A recent JAMA-published study following women aged 63–99 found the reverse pattern too: every extra 7 kg of grip strength tracked with a 12% lower mortality risk.

The important caveat nobody puts in the headline

Grip strength doesn't *cause* longevity — squeezing a hand gripper every day won't add years to your life on its own. What it reflects is your overall muscle mass, neuromuscular function, and how resilient your body is as a system. It's a marker, not a lever. The actual lever is the total-body strength and activity that a strong grip tends to come along with.

How to test your own in under a minute

You don't need a clinical dynamometer to get a useful read:

  • Dead hang test. Hang from a bar with straight arms for as long as you can. Under 10 seconds suggests real room to build; 30–60+ seconds is a strong result that also reflects shoulder and core health.
  • A basic hand dynamometer. These run around €25–30 and are the same tool used in the actual research studies — squeeze, read the number in kg, track it over months.
  • The functional version. Can you carry both your grocery bags in one trip without switching hands? Open every jar in your kitchen without help? That's grip strength doing its actual job.

How to build it (without turning into a grip-training obsessive)

You don't need a dedicated grip program. These do double duty as full-body training that happens to build grip as a side effect:

  • Farmers carries — walk holding a heavy weight in each hand, as far and as long as you can.
  • Dead hangs — a few times a week, working up in total hang time.
  • Rows and pull-ups — anything where your hand has to hold on under real load.
  • Deadlifts and heavy carries in general — if you already lift, your grip is probably already improving without you tracking it.

Treat your grip number the way you'd treat a resting heart rate — a useful, easy-to-track proxy for how your training is going, not a target to chase in isolation. If you're already doing strength work two or three times a week, your grip is very likely already trending the right direction. If it's the only thing you're not training, it might be worth adding — not because a stronger squeeze adds years directly, but because it's rarely weak in isolation from everything else that does.
