WHY THIS CHORE
SHOW UP READY.
Less a race than a pilgrimage — the most historically loaded ultra in the world, run on the actual roads of the myth it's named for.

A Race Built on a 2,500-Year-Old Story
Spartathlon retraces the route of Pheidippides, the Athenian messenger sent to Sparta in 490 BC to seek help before the Battle of Marathon. Five RAF officers proved the distance was runnable in a day and a half in 1982; the race has run every year since 1983.
The Numbers
246km, 75 checkpoints, a 36-hour cutoff, starting at the foot of the Acropolis and finishing at the statue of King Leonidas in Sparta. The field is capped at 400 — entry requires meeting strict qualifying standards, and even qualified runners aren't guaranteed a spot.
Terrain
Coastal roads out of Athens, the Isthmus of Corinth, vineyards and olive groves, and the genuinely brutal climb over Mount Parthenion in the dark — widely cited as the race's psychological crux.
Daily Chore Take
This isn't a bucket-list race you casually decide to run — the qualification bar alone rules out anyone without serious ultra experience. But for the right athlete, there's no ultra with a deeper sense of history under their feet.
