While Tokyo, Osaka and most of Japan's biggest marathons cluster into the cool, dry January-to-March window, Hokkaido Marathon deliberately runs in late August — genuinely hot, humid conditions that make it a completely different physical test from the rest of the country's calendar.

A flat, wide route through Sapporo's distinctive grid-planned streets, Japan's fifth-largest city and the unofficial capital of its northernmost main island — genuinely fast on paper, genuinely demanding in practice once the August heat sets in.
