The Route
Start at 8:30 in the town of Marathon, at the site of the ancient battle. The first 4 km run slightly downhill, then the route passes the Marathon Tomb before a steep climb at the Stavros Junction, followed by a descent to Agia Paraskevi Square. Along Mesogeion Avenue through Chalandri and Cholargos, the course flattens and trends downhill to the finish. The section between km 10 and 31, with its long climb, is considered one of the most demanding among the world's major marathons.
The Finish
The finish is inside the historic Panathenaic Stadium — venue of the first modern Olympic Games in 1896, and the same course used for the 2004 Athens Olympics.
