Running the Origin Story
Every marathon distance traces back to this route. The Athens Classic Marathon has run since 1972, most years serving as Greece's national championship, and regularly draws over 15,000 finishers on the full distance.
The Course
A net downhill overall but front-loaded with a genuine climb in the first half — the course rises steadily from the town of Marathon before descending into central Athens, finishing at the Panathenaic Stadium, the site of the 1896 Olympics.
