WHAT TO EXPECT

The Original Self-Sufficiency Ultra
First run in 1986 with just 23 participants (including founder Patrick Bauer, who had crossed part of the Sahara solo two years earlier), the Marathon des Sables has grown into one of endurance sport's most legendary formats — over 30,000 finishers across 40 editions.
Carry Everything
Runners carry their own food and mandatory gear for the entire week; only water is provided by organizers at checkpoints. Stages range from 20km to a brutal ~80-90km "long stage," plus a marathon-distance finale — roughly 250km total across six days, through dunes, rocky plateaus and dry valleys, with daytime heat regularly exceeding 40°C.
The Bivouac Life
Competitors sleep in shared open-sided tents between stages — the same tent group for the entire week becomes a genuine support system, part of why finishers so often describe MDS as as much a human experience as an athletic one.
Daily Chore Take
This is not a race to enter on a whim — the self-sufficiency format means training has to include carrying real pack weight, not just running fitness. Registration opens months ahead and spots are limited; if this is the actual goal, the application itself is the first real step.
