WHAT TO EXPECT
VERIFIED EVENT DETAILS · DAILY CHORE EDITORIAL COMMENTARY
The Routes
Riders choose from three fully car-free routes, deciding on the fly at marked splits along the way:
- Sellaronda — 55 km, 1,780 m climbing, 4 passes (Campolongo, Pordoi, Sella, Gardena)
- Medium — 106 km, 3,130 m climbing, 6 passes (adds Falzarego/Valparola)
- Maratona — 138 km, 4,230 m climbing, 7 passes (adds the legendary Passo Giau)
Start is in La Villa, Alta Badia, with the field released from 5:30–6:15 am in starting groups. The Maratona course record is 4:23:31 (Emanuele Negrini, 2006).
The Passes
Campolongo, Pordoi, Sella, Gardena, Falzarego/Valparola and — on the full course — the punishing Passo Giau, one of the most feared climbs in road cycling, ridden through dramatic Dolomite rock formations and switchback after switchback.
Entry
Around 35,000 cyclists apply each year for roughly 8,500–9,000 spots, split evenly between Italian and international riders — one of the hardest tickets in amateur cycling to secure. The 2026/27 entry fee is €160, plus a €10 refundable chip deposit and €10 non-refundable one-day licence fee. Entry includes mechanical assistance and refreshments on course, the post-race pasta party, the official Maratona jersey, and free participation in all Bike Week activities.
Who It's For
Serious amateur cyclists chasing a genuine bucket-list climbing day — the full Maratona course demands real fitness and descending skill; the Sellaronda option makes the same legendary passes accessible to less experienced riders.
Around the Event
A full "Bike Week" runs in the days before the race, with shakeout rides and opportunities to recce sections of the course. Riders aged 18+ can also choose to race only the two shorter distances if they prefer.
