WHY THIS CHORE
SHOW UP READY.
If you're doing one full-distance triathlon in your life, athletes say this is the one — a faster course than most Ironman races, a 15-hour cutoff, and 300,000 spectators lining a small Bavarian town.
WHAT TO EXPECT
VERIFIED EVENT DETAILS · DAILY CHORE EDITORIAL COMMENTARY
The Race
Challenge Roth covers the classic long-distance triathlon distances — 3.8 km swim, 180 km bike, 42.2 km run — identical to an Ironman, but organised independently by Challenge Family and the local DATEV group since 1984. A faster course profile and a more generous 15-hour cutoff make it accessible to a wide range of finishers, while the atmosphere is what sets it apart: around 5,000 individual athletes, 700 relay teams, 7,500 volunteers and roughly 300,000 spectators packed into a small Bavarian town for one Sunday in July.
The Swim
A one-lap, rolling-start swim in the Main-Donau Canal, a dead-straight shipping canal cut through Bavarian farmland — 1.9 km out, a loop under a pontoon bridge, 1.9 km back. Waves leave every six seconds in self-seeded pace groups, widely considered the calmest, cleanest start in long-distance triathlon.
The Bike & the Solarer Berg
180 km through the rolling landscape of Middle Franconia. The legendary Solarer Berg climb has become the emotional centrepiece of the race — lined by tens of thousands of fans, it's one of the most atmospheric single climbs in endurance sport.
The Run & Finish
The closing marathon brings athletes back to Roth through cheering crowds lined the entire way. The finish, inside the Triathlon Park stadium, is widely regarded as the best in long-distance triathlon — runners descend a ramp into an enclosed arena with over 10,000 seated spectators, a light show and Roth-specific anthems.
Registration
No qualification system — entry is first-come, first-served, and famously brutal: the 2027 edition sold out in 18 seconds when registration opened on 13 July 2026. A Late Entry Draw offers a second chance for anyone who misses the initial window. On-site registration for the following year opens the day after each race, in the Triathlon Park.
Race Weekend
Race week begins the preceding Thursday with expo, briefings, a warm-up swim and the traditional pasta party — the expo itself is the largest triathlon expo in the world.
Who It's For
Experienced triathletes chasing a personal best on a genuinely fast course, and anyone who wants to experience long-distance triathlon's single best race-day atmosphere at least once. Not a beginner-friendly entry point — this is a bucket-list target for athletes who already have a full-distance race or two behind them.
