The Biggest Stage in Half-Distance Triathlon
Once a year, the world's fastest age-group and professional 70.3 athletes converge on a single city for the World Championship. In 2026, that city is Nice — no stranger to the honour, having previously hosted the full-distance World Championship and multiple 70.3 editions on the French Riviera.
The Course
A 1.9 km swim in the Mediterranean off Nice's pebble beaches, followed by a genuinely hilly 90 km bike course climbing into the hinterland above the city — this is not a flat, fast 70.3 course, it rewards real bike fitness. The 21.1 km run finishes along the iconic Promenade des Anglais with the sea on one side the whole way.
Qualification
Unlike most races on this list, you can't simply register — a start line spot here comes via qualifying slots earned at IRONMAN 70.3 races worldwide throughout the season, making this genuinely a "you've arrived" race for age-group triathletes.
Atmosphere
World Championship weekends bring a different energy entirely — expect a packed expo, national team kits everywhere, and a finish-line crowd that's there specifically because this is the one week of the year when the whole sport is watching the same race.

Even as a spectator, this is one of the best weekends in European endurance sport — and for the age-groupers who've qualified, a Nice World Championship start line is as close as most amateur triathletes get to lining up at an actual World Championship.
