The Race That Started a Sport
In 2002, four friends crossed the Stockholm archipelago from Utö to Sandhamn on a bet, swimming and running between islands with no transition zones. That bet became ÖTILLÖ — Swedish for "island to island" — and grew into swimrun, now raced worldwide. The 2026 edition marks the 20th anniversary of the World Championship it inspired.
The Course
Two-person teams cover roughly 70 km total — about 61 km of trail running and 9 km of open-water swimming — across 25 islands, with 46 separate swim-run transitions and no support besides what the team carries. Competitors must be fast in and out of the water simply to finish before dusk.
Why It's the Hardest Kind of Hard
There's no stopping to change gear efficiently — wetsuits, shoes and even a short tow rope between teammates all stay on through both disciplines. Pacing, teamwork and transition efficiency matter as much as raw fitness.
2026: A Record Field
The 20th anniversary edition has drawn the largest start field in ÖTILLÖ history — a record 200 teams — reflecting how far the sport has grown from its four-friend origin story.
Daily Chore Take
This is swimrun's Boston Marathon — the race every swimrunner measures themselves against, in the exact archipelago where the sport was born. Entry is competitive (ranking-based qualification or wildcard), which only adds to the prestige of a start line here.
