Why It's Suddenly Everywhere
Copenhagen Marathon has always been a Nordic favourite, but 2026 changed its status: the race sold out its entire field in 23 hours, pushing organisers to abandon first-come-first-served registration in favour of a lottery for 2027 — joining Dublin and Valencia in Europe's small club of marathons that have had to make that switch. It's a clear signal of how fast demand for this race has grown.
The Route
A flat, loop course starting and finishing at the Islands Brygge harbourfront. Runners pass through central Copenhagen and the Royal Palace and Parliament building, then through Vesterbro, Frederiksberg — home to an avenue nicknamed the "Nordic Champs-Élysées" — and Nørrebro, before returning along the water. Fully measured and World Athletics Bronze Label certified, it's built for personal bests.
Scale
Around 30,000 participants make it Denmark's largest marathon and one of the biggest running events in Northern Europe, with bands and entertainment lining the course throughout.
Entry
Registration for 2027 runs through a lottery, open 13 May to 3 June, with each person allowed to enter the draw once. Entry fee is DKK 995. Minimum age 16, with a 6-hour net time limit.
Who It's For
Runners chasing a fast, flat PB course with major-marathon energy but without (yet) the multi-year waitlists of London or Berlin — though that gap may not last given current demand.
History
Established in 1980, Copenhagen Marathon holds a World Athletics Bronze Label and is professionally measured by the Danish Athletics Federation.
