Wales' Toughest, Twice Voted the UK's Best
Established in 1982 as a deliberate alternative to city marathons, Marathon Eryri circles Yr Wyddfa (Snowdon) on closed roads — a genuinely brutal, spectacular route that earned Runner's World's "best marathon in the UK" vote on two separate occasions.
The Course
Starting outside Llanberis, the route climbs the Llanberis Pass to over 1,100ft before descending through Beddgelert, then facing a decisive final climb to Bwlch y Groes near 1,200ft before a fast finish back into the village — roughly 840m of total climbing on a course with a generous 7-hour cutoff, reflecting genuine difficulty rather than a slow field.
Not a PB Course
No Boston Qualifying or Good For Age credit here — this route is run for the mountain, not the finish time. Late October weather in Eryri adds cold, wind and rain to the terrain itself.

If a fast marathon is the goal, look elsewhere — but if the goal is a genuinely unforgettable, hard-earned finish, this is one of the best-regarded mountain marathons in Europe for exactly that reason.
