Running Into the New Year
Born in 1964 as a small neighborhood race, San Silvestre Vallecana has grown into one of the world's most famous New Year's Eve runs — nearly 40,000 runners in the popular category alone, most in costume, with roughly a million spectators lining the route.
The Course
A flat, gently downhill 10km starting at the Santiago Bernabéu Stadium, descending the Castellana through Plaza de Cibeles before finishing at Vallecas Stadium — genuinely fast, and genuinely floodlit as darkness falls.
Two Races, One Night
The Popular race welcomes anyone 16 and over; a separate International race is reserved for elite and federated athletes with real qualifying times, with the world's best distance runners regularly racing on the same evening.
Daily Chore Take
This isn't a race for chasing a serious PB in a quiet field — it's the opposite, and that's the entire point. Wear the costume. Everyone else will.
